Apple Magsafe Airline Power Adapter MA598Z A

With a MagSafe Airline Power Adapter, you’ll never again worry about losing power while traveling. Just plug it into your airline seat power port and keep your MacBook or MacBook Pro powered up for the entire flight. Now you’ll never lose your work or interrupt a DVD movie because your battery runs out at 35,000 feet. The MagSafe Airline Power Adapter will keep your MacBook or MacBook Pro juiced throughout your flight. Sleek and light, it works with in-seat DC power ports available on many commercial airliners, both EmPower ports and 20mm ports with the included adapter. Because it’s a MagSafe Adapter, you’ll continue to enjoy MagSafe convenience just as you’re already enjoying at home or work. The magnetic DC plug both ensures a tight connection and enables a clean break from the power port if there is undue tension preventing your MacBook from being pulled off of your tray table if someone accidentally yanks the cord.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Does what it says it does
This is a simple product with a simple mission…to allow you to use your Apple laptop on a plane without worrying about draining your batteries during long trips. My only qualm is the cord could be a tad longer if the power port isn’t right in front of you. (American Airlines customer service verified that SeatGuru.com was correct in where they identified the power ports as being, but it turned out both were off by one row in the back of the plane due a row of seats being added further front, (according to the flight attendant who said she’s seen that happen numerous times). I was able to plug into the port in the row ahead of me both going to and returning from the Orient and the cord reached, but with nary a centimeter to spare.) The plug seems durable enough, despite other comments I’ve read. I personally can’t imagine how some can get parts left in the power port, but that is something of which one should be aware as others have reported it. I found the cost well worth the price of not being bored out of my skull for two 14-hour trips, and it was worth it not to have to watch the same in-flight movie multiple times.
3 Stars Two faulty units
I would have given this unit a “1″, but I believe this unit will work ok. However the two cables I received were faulty. Not a good start. They would work as long as I tweaked the wire at the base of the magnet portion. Otherwise it didn’t work. I am trying a third one soon, wish me luck…
3 Stars Don’t Forget the Tip
The product does what it says. I would give it a higher rating if the design was better- you have to plug the cord into the tip and it is very easy to leave the tip in the outlet when you are unplugging it. I did it on the second trip and now it is useless because you cannot get a replacement tip.
2 Stars No good for car
I bought mine in a store, and it appears to have a 12V cigarette adapter. I get the product home and pull it out of the packaging and read the fine print. Only usable on some airlines. Will not work in cars.

Scanning the blogs, it seems that Apple isn’t interested in providing a car adapter. They also don’t seem to be interested in licensing the mag safe adapter so someone else can produce it.

I guess this is just my fault for buying into a closed proprietary platform.

I give it 2 stars cause airline adapters aren’t very useful. And while it is not the product’s fault, if you are looking for a car adapter, this is not for you!

2 Stars What planes does it work on?
I traveled on four modern, recently commissioned planes, including the Boeing 777, and none of them had outlets for the Apple Airline Power Adapter. I assume it would work well, if I could plug it in. For me, however, a waste of $50.
